California Health Insurance Regulations
There are a few states that are not allowed to place an “exclusionary rider” on a new health insurance policy. California is one of those states. An exclusionary rider will exclude health insurance coverage for treatment for a preexisting condition. The acceptance guidelines in California are typically stricter than in other states, and more California health insurance applications are turned down or declined for individuals, because many insurance companies decide simply not to issue insurance coverage for anyone with any preexisting condition.
California Small Group Health Insurance
Our health care and health insurance costs are on a steady incline. Because of this, group health insurance is becoming more and more critical for many employees.
The main difference between group health insurance and individual health insurance is that under a group plan you are guaranteed coverage, while under an individual health insurance plan you are not.
The definition of a “small group” as it relates to California health insurance is any company with anywhere from two to fifty employees. The company has to have at least two employees that work at least twenty hours each week for at least six months out of each year.
Any employee working for a company falling within the definition of a small group is guaranteed approval when they apply for health insurance in the state of California. The insurance company is only allowed to make an adjustment of their rates by no more than ten percent. California health insurance rates are based on the applicant’s zip code where they live, their age, and the makeup of the family. Any company’s owner will qualify as an employee if he earns wages from the company.
Cal-COBRA / Continuation Coverage
COBRA is a federal law that requires employers to offer health insurance for a limited time to their terminated employees who will be losing their health insurance coverage because of leaving work. It is continuation of California health insurance group coverage that normally lasts 18 months, but can last up to 36 months. You have up to 62 days from your last date of coverage to decide to continue coverage and to continue coverage on a monthly basis.
Some points about Cobra to keep in mind:
-Cobra rates may be higher (up to 10% higher) than the rate the company was paying for you.
-Even if you wait until the end of the 62 day period to make a decision to enroll in Cobra, you will still be required to pay for the previous two month’s premiums.
-Dependent costs are usually much higher on a Cobra plan.
-Cobra is paid monthly, and can also be cancelled monthly.
